Of moonlight and moonstones

OS requested a pair of earrings to match a ring she bought from me. I readily complied and designed something on the spot.

Little did I know how exacting the design is and how the execution must be perfect.  She has one slightly higher ear piercing than the other so we needed to make an allotment for it.

The result.

I love how the luminescent quality of the moonstones peek thru. This wonderful phenomenon is called adularescence.

This time round, the diamonds and the black gold metal take a backseat.

Thank you for your patience Olivia!

I hope you enjoy wearing them for many years to come.

Taking care of your jewellery

When you purchase jewellery, it most usually is a hefty investment.  Here are some tips on how to take care of them courtesy of jewellery expert, Don Grieg (@focusbmi on twitter)

Jewelry Care: :

-Never go swimming in your jewelry, chlorine in swimming pools can cause damage

-When cleaning jewelry, make sure it is completey dry before storing. Moisture can tarnish/pit metals

-When cleaning jewelry – use guidelines for cleaning the stone, not the metal.

-Put on jewelry over a rug. Helps to avoid impact damage should you drop it while putting it on

-Store in a soft fabric pouch. They are ‘organic’ items that need to breath or they will dry out

-Check for loose stones on a monthly basis and any issues repaired immediately.

-Remove jewelry before using harsh cleaning chemicals. Helps keep the lustre and shine!

-Don’t store silver in cardboard/paper containers. Sulfur producing compounds accelerate oxidation.

-Gold: Is soft and can scratch. Use warm water & a soft-bristled toothbruth for tough/embedded dirt

-Gemstones: Semi-precious stones (turquoise, opal, jade) are porous. Use warm water. Don’t soak!

-Gemstones: Diamonds, rubies & sapphires are tough substances & can be cleaned w ammonia based cleaners

How They Wear It

Nancy Valiente looking chic with a fuchsia stingray cuff with an oval slider.

Romulo wears his grass green stingray belt

Leah chose the turquoise transformers with a turquoise drop in black silver.

The hits

Jaime King’s a real snake charmer. This Bulgari necklace is amazing!

My favorite: January Jones in a torquoise and diamond necklace. I loved how she didn’t wear earrings so the necklace becomes the focus of attention.

Gwyneth Paltrow knows her jewellery.  She knows when to pile it on or keep it simple.  She is always smashing.

Jessica Stam and her bracelets.  It looks like one jumbled expensive mess and I love it!

This is perfection. Kate Bosworth is simply divine, the lips, the skin, the diamond earrings.

The near hit:

Solange Knowles wears a great geometric cuff. Looks like pyrite stones or beaten gold?  I think this bangle would have been a standout if she didn’t pile on the rings as well.

The misses:

She is downtown cool but I wish Mary Kate’s earrings were more polished.  This feels a bit too casual no?

OTT Karolina Kurkova.  I feel that this sequined dress with the sequined beret merits a colorful gemstone. Not diamonds.  Anyway, who would have noticed the jewellery if you’re wearing all those sequins?

Fashion tip: If you like the beret, you can get one exactly like it at Carolina’s in a multitude of colors for only P500 (US$ 11).
